Indonesia: Rempang Island residents raising concerns about the Eco City project experience intimidation & violence; incl. co. response

Villagers raising concern to a land development project by PT Makmur Elok Graha, the Rempang Eco-City, were subjected to violence by the company's personnel. In September 2023, authorities broke a demonstration staged by locals to prevent eviction by use of teargas. The incident resulted to more than forty arrests. Moreover, Rempang Island residents continue to be subjected to intimidation, violence and threats. The Rempang Eco-City project will require the eviction of about 7,500 residents including Indigenous peoples. It features a $11.6 billion glass and solar panel factory by Xinyi International Investment.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited PT Makmur Elok Graha and Xinyi International Investment to respond to the allegations. Xinyi International Investmen's response is linked below. PT Makmur Elok Graha did not respond.
