Japan: Prosecutor still may not bring charges against TEPCO execs, despite new evidence

After the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor’s Office’s declined to bring charges of corporate manslaughter against three former TEPCO executives, an independent review panel recommended in July 2014 that the Office reconsider the decision. Nevertheless, it appears once again that charges will not be brought. The Prosecutor’s Office has indicated that new evidence put forward still did not show that the executives had specific knowledge of the potential dangers of a nuclear disaster, and that therefore there were no grounds for corporate manslaughter.

The Prosecutor’s Office has declined to bring charges against all 42 relevant personnel in TEPCO’s management and government.
