Malaysia: Grab delivery riders protest new earning framework, leading Govt. to propose 'gig economy commission'; incl., co comment
In January 2023, Free Malaysia Today reported Grab delivery riders in Malaysia protest the company’s new earnings framework, calling for riders to boycott the company. The article states base fares have been reduced while ‘incentives have been increased for peak-hour deliveries, distant pick-ups and extended wait times to pick-up deliveries’.
In a statement, Grab said the new earnings framework ‘benefits’ its ‘most active delivery partners’ and that bookings that require more time and effort will be more ‘fairly compensated’.
Later in January, Free Malaysia Today reported that a protest held on 19th January saw hundreds of Grab delivery drivers object the new earning framework. In response to the protest, the deputy prime minister has pledged to establish a ‘gig economy commission’. The writer of the article alleges, however, that the creation of a gig economy commission may not successfully protect gig workers’ rights.
