Portugal’s textile and apparel industry is negotiating with the Trump administration to amend the newly imposed 15% US tariff on EU products.
The sector, represented by the Textile Association of Portugal (ATP) and Anivec, is aiming to lower the rates for items now hit by the baseline tariff that were previously taxed at a lower rate.
It hopes certain product categories will see lower tariffs in future negotiations. These include fabrics, finished garments, home textiles, technical textiles and fashion accessories...
And the industry warns the tariffs may result in the dismissal of up to 10,000 textile workers in Portugal, affecting 6,000 companies nationwide.
