Rainforest Foundation Norway's comments on CMSI final consultation drafts raise concerns regarding biodiversity and Indigenous People's rights

'Rainforest Foundation Norway's comments and inputs to the final Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative (CMSI) public consultation', 10 December 2025

CMSI is a mining-led voluntary standard developed by Copper Mark, ICMM, MAC, World Gold Council. The standard is an industry-led project to create a common framework for site-level performance by merging separate mining standards and simplifying verification.

Civil society has sounded an alarm about the CMSI standard due to its weak provisions that pose significant risks, potentially driving the mining industry to a race to the bottom at the expense of Indigenous People and local communities, nature and biodiversity.

Rainforest Foundation Norway provided input mainly on Performance Area 19: Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Nature, Performance Area 1: Corporate requirement and Performance Area 14 Indigenous People.

There are important gaps in relation to biodiversity, ecosystem and nature indicators, as well as on corporate requirements and Indigenous people's rights.
