Siihasin Hope Alvarado is a Diné water protector who spent almost a year and a half traveling between Minnesota and Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA to assist Line 3 protestors. They took part in demonstrations and other activities to spread the word about the project’s negative effects on Indigenous communities. After learning that two Enbridge pipeline workers had been detained in a sex trafficking operation in August 2021, Alvarado demonstrated outside of a “man camp,” a short-term accommodation for employees in the extractive industries. Even though there was no pipeline on the property, police officers arrested Alvarado for trespassing on important infrastructure. Alvarado spent a night in custody, including 15 hours in solitary confinement without access to a functional toilet or sink, and was also reportedly intimidated by jail guards. All charges were eventually dropped.
