USA: Supermarket Safeway exposes warehouse workers to hazardous conditions, finds OSH authority

The USA's Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) and its California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) has cited supermarket Safeway USD182,000 in proposed penalties for significant safety violations. In all, the labour authorities found Safeway put approximately 1,700 workers at risk of serious injuries at the company’s warehouse in Tracy, their largest facility in the nation and one that is reportedly now the "riskiest" when compared to other warehousing establishments with over than 1,000 workers, found analysis of federal data. Over 92% of the 650 injuries recorded at the facility in 2022 and 2023 required days away from work.
