Guinea: Rubbish dump collapse in Conakry kills 30 and injures 22

Informal translation from BHRC - "Guinée : Trente morts dans l'éboulement d'une décharge d'ordures à Conakry" - 20 Minutes / AFP, 24 August 2026

“On Sunday, thirty people were killed and twenty-two injured in Guinea when a rubbish dump collapsed in a suburb of the capital, Conakry… The mountain of waste began to slide at 2 a.m. in the Dar es Salam neighbourhood, in the Gbessia municipality, following heavy rainfall that buried several houses in the capital’s outskirts.”

The Dar-es-Salam landfill is part of a waste management system involving private operators. Albayrak, through its Guinean subsidiary Yeşil Adamlar, is responsible for waste collection, while the Italian group PICCINI is responsible for operating the Dar-es-Salam landfill.

The government said that “significant human and material resources have been mobilised to search for any people who may still be trapped, rescue victims and recover the bodies.” Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the site of the tragedy.

“This tragedy is all the more concerning given that the closure of the dump had been announced for Sunday, 23 August. It is now up to the relevant authorities to establish, in full transparency, the circumstances that led to this disaster and to draw all the necessary conclusions,” said Cellou Dalein Diallo, a Guinean opposition figure and former prime minister living in exile abroad.
