The Business & Human Rights Centre contacted PICCINI regarding allegations of concerns over the management of the site and the safety of surrounding communities. PICCINI expressed its condolences and stated that the landfill was under temporary operational management pending its planned closure and the transfer of activities to another site. PICCINI referred to the exceptionally heavy rainfall and acknowledged longstanding concerns regarding the landfill’s saturation and the need to implement safer solutions. The company also stressed that it did not have the legal authority to order evacuations or carry out demolitions, while stating that its staff had regularly asked informal operators to leave dangerous areas. Following the tragedy, the landfill was closed and waste treatment activities were transferred outside Conakry.
