Security company settles lawsuit over Union Station beating hours before Denver council rejects $25M contract with firm

The country’s largest private security company settled a lawsuit filed by a Denver artist who was assaulted by one of the company’s guards, hours before the Denver City Council rejected a proposed three-year, $25 million contract with the firm. The settlement is tentative and subject to approval, Jeremy Lee, a spokesperson for Allied Universal, told council members late Monday night.

Allied Universal and the Regional Transportation District on Monday settled the lawsuit filed in April by Raverro Stinnett, who was waiting for a train on April 20, 2018, at Union Station when one of the company’s guards took him into a bathroom and beat him while other guards watched. Stinnett, suspected of no crime, suffered permanent brain damage that hindered his promising career as an artist.

... Three of the guards involved in Stinnett’s assault were convicted of criminal charges and were fired by the company. The assault also prompted questions at RTD, which contracts with Allied for the security guards at Union Station. Some members of RTD’s Board of Directors in August tried to terminate the district’s contract with Allied Universal because of the assault and ongoing protests about law enforcement, but failed to garner the necessary votes.
