Australia: Newmont faces class action over alleged contamination from its Cadia gold mine
Landowners in the Cadia and Errowanbang valleys in New South Wales filed a major environmental class action against Newmont, the operator of the Cadia goldmine. The lawsuit alleges that a "toxic trifecta" of arsenic, heavy metals and forever chemicals. The plaintiffs also claimed that over 2,000 properties within a 17-kilometre radius of the site have been contaminated. The claimants are seeking both financial compensation and an injunction to force changes in mine operations.
In response to the lawsuit, Newmont has confirmed it will respond through the legal process but has declined further comment while the matter is before the court.
