Bangladesh: 1,800 laid off as two garment factories such down, citing financial difficulties

"1,800 in limbo as 2 Gazipur factories shut down", 24 June 2026

The authorities of Unique Washing & Dyeing and Unique Designers Ltd...have announced permanent closure due to financial difficulties and other challenges, leaving around 1,800 workers anxious and uncertain about their future...

A settlement on the payment of outstanding wages and other dues was reached at a tripartite meeting between workers and management on Sunday at the office of the Superintendent of Police of Industrial Police-2, Gazipur...

Billal Sohag, a worker, said, “...With the sudden closure, we have been left in dire straits.”

“We have heard that our dues will be cleared on July 27, but we are still worried about whether we will actually be paid,” he added.

Shafiul Alam, president of Gazipur Metropolitan unit of the Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation, said, “The crisis over arrears and benefits was resolved through tripartite discussions. The management chose to permanently close the factory instead of resuming operations. As such, hundreds of workers have become unemployed with a bleak future ahead.”

“The June 21 agreement did not fully ensure the overdue benefits and compensation under labour law, depriving the workers of their rightful entitlements,” he added.
