Brazil: Indigenous leaders fear land invasion by loggers & illegal miners taking advantage of COVID-19 chaos

Indigenous territories, communities and their leaders in Brazil are constantly targeted by loggers and land grabbers. Since the beginning of Bolsonaro’s administration, President’s rhetoric and actions have targeted the country's indigenous people, which the former UN Special Rapporteur on indigenous people Victoria Tauli-Corpuz said was putting them at risk and was discriminatory and racist. Now fears are growing that land grabbers, illegal loggers and miners are about to take advantage of the COVID-19 situation to increase their attacks on indigenous territories and their leaders, emboldened by President Jair Bolsonaro’s stance and decreased enforcement and monitoring activities.
