HIV testing at BPOs may be illegal [India]

…Media reports recently said a few BPOs [business process outsourcing companies] were examining the possibility of HIV testing at their call centres…Among the various concerns...were whether such testing would be discriminatory to employees and unconstitutional…the government says there is no public health rationale for mandatory testing of a person for HIV/AIDS…Through NACO, [it] has issued a comprehensive HIV testing policy…[that] testing should be voluntary after obtaining informed consent, with pre and post-test counseling… In the event certain BPOs still choose to continue with the proposed tests, a key issue...in addition to ensuring there is no discrimination to the employee...is employee confidentiality…
