Big sporting events, such as the Summer Olympic Games 2020 held this year in Japan and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup 2022 in Qatar, entail intensive building of new stadiums and other facilities and are reliant on construction workers from low and middle income countries...
Although the health risks of mass gatherings are considered a public health priority, the health vulnerabilities of low skilled labour migrants concerned in constructing and maintaining venues before and during such events has received little attention.
Building on our article examining the evidence base, this article provides recommendations for policy makers in government, international sports bodies, and the construction industry to promote health and access to health systems among migrant construction workers in upcoming big sporting events.
