Mexico: 15 people killed in dispute linked to wind energy projects in Oaxaca

In June 2020, AP reported that a group of at least 15 people were attacked and killed in a Oaxaca village, seemingly the latest action in a dispute over the building of wind-power projects. Opponents say that the projecs will encroach on their fishing, farming and sacred spaces.

The government of the San Mateo del Mar area, which has a predominantly indigenous population, stated the deaths were due to the actions of "dissident townspeople", reportedly with links to a "local crime boss". Activists who oppose the wind ower projects say that "the mayor's followers" ambushed them at a coronavirus checkpoint, shooting and bludgeoning the victims to death.
