Myanmar: CSOs cautiously welcome ENEOS' withdrawal from Yetagun gas project, calling for responsible disengagement and decommissioning; incl. co. response

On 2 May 2022, ENEOS announced a withdrawal from the Yetagun gas project, followed by the withdrawal decisions by other investors Mitsubishi, Petronas and PTTEP. The project has been accused by CSOs for financing the Myanmar military.

ENEOS invested in the Yetagun gas project through its consolidated subsidiary, Nippon Oil Exploration (Myanmar). In its statement, ENEOS said it took into consideration "the country's current situation, including the social issues, and project economics based on the technical evaluation" of the gas field.

Mekong Watch, FoE Japan, and Justice for Myanmar (JFM) cautiously welcomed ENEOS' move, while remaining concerned whether disengagement would be conducted in a responsible manner. The CSOs urged "ENEOS and its partners to responsibly disengage, with transparency and through consultation with local communities and civil society stakeholders."

Business and Human Rights Resource Centre asked ENEOS to respond to the call by CSOs. The response is provided below.
