Pedro Uc Be is a Mayan land and territory defender. As part of the Territory Defenders’ Assembly Maya Múuch’ Xíinbal and the National Indigenous Congress, he works to protect his ancestral lands from renewable energy projects, agribusiness, tourism and most recently the Mayan Train project. On 16th December, Pedro Uc Be received a Whatsapp message threatening him and his family. The message was sent to his two children and ex-partner giving him 48 hours to leave the community. International organisations such as Frontline Defenders have indicated that this threat is a product of the increased visibility the defender has received in his outward opposition to the Mayan Train project, denouncing the irregularities within the consultation process accusing it of violating the rights of indigenous peoples.
