Response by Anglo American on water scarcity in El Melón community, Chile

“Collaborative solutions from Mining to tackle water scarcity” – February 22, 2021

...Water scarcity is a reality and is affecting part of the community, and we believe that we all have a responsibility to generate actions to help overcome this serious problem. We have said it in many occasions, Anglo American is not responsible for the water shortage that is affecting this area…The water shortage that affects this area is similar to what is happening in other parts of the country: due to the geographical location and climatic conditions, the area is being highly affected by climate change, which has generated a drought that has been dragging on for more than a decade. That is the main factor that generates this problem…In this current context of drought, we understand that the priority is human consumption and we are making every effort to minimize the use of fresh water in our operations. With this objective, we developed a water management strategy focused on gradually reducing the use of fresh water, as is the case at El Soldado. In addition, since 2012, we have been promoting various projects - with an investment that exceeds US$ 5.6 million - to support the community in this problem…The water rights that El Soldado has in the Nogales commune, according to official data from the General Water Directorate (DGA), represent only 3.6% of the total rights granted in the area, well below the other productive activities...
