S. Korea: ESG disclosure to become mandatory for top listed companies from 2028, ruling party and government agree
"Ruling party and government: 'ESG disclosure to become mandatory from 2028 for Kospi-listed firms worth 10 trillion won or more'", 8 July 2026
The Democratic Party of Korea and the government have decided to make sustainability (ESG) disclosure mandatory from 2028 for KOSPI-listed companies with consolidated total assets of 10 trillion won or more. The party and government unveiled the plan — the 'Sustainability Disclosure Institutionalisation Scheme' — at a policy consultation meeting held at the National Assembly on 8 July.
Under the plan, the party and government agreed to begin ESG disclosure in 2028 for KOSPI-listed companies with consolidated total assets of 10 trillion won or more, extending this in 2029 to companies with 5 trillion won or more in assets. (…)
…The plan will also institutionalise 'third-party assurance', under which an independent third-party body assesses the reliability of disclosed information. However, taking into account that assurance-related practices have not yet been sufficiently established either domestically or internationally, assurance will only become mandatory from 2030, two years after disclosure itself becomes mandatory.
