UK: British pension funds criticised for financing Chinese companies allegedly linked to serious human rights abuses

A report by Hong Kong Watch, a pro-democracy advocacy group, suggests UK pension funds are investing in Chinese companies allegedly linked to human rights abuses. The report highlights the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) and Legal & General as two British firms that have supported companies associated with the production of surveillance technology allegedly targeting Uighur Muslims. Both firms were contacted for comment. More than 100 British MPs have called for their parliamentary pension fund to divest from Chinese firms linked to the related allegations.

The BBC pension fund has also been criticised for investing more than £150million in Chinese state-owned companies accused of links to alleged serious human rights violations, including one that is part of a company blacklisted by the United States government.
