Urban poor can hope for micro finance [India]

The country is likely to get a dedicated micro-finance institution for the urban and semi-urban poor soon... Unlike most micro-finance institutions (MFIs), this venture [Ujjivan Financial Services] proposes to be run as a profit-making organisation..."The rationale is that as a financial institution, it would require substantial capital injections to scale up, which can be accessed from the capital markets and not be solely dependent on grants and donations," said Mr Ghosh, who will spearhead the venture as its CEO.
