Carlos Maaz Coc was a member of the indigenous Maya-Q’eqchi' community and an environmental and land rights defender. He was killed by police despatched to break up a protest in Izabal, Guatemala. The protesters marched for the alleged contamination of the Izabal lake and the Dulce River, which affects local fishermen due to Compañía Procesadora de Níquel de Izabal (PRONICO) activities, working under Solway Investment Group.
