Chinese firms have invested some $30 billion in the Indonesian nickel supply chain as the country places nickel export ban to spur the growth of the local smelting industry. Nickel production in Chinese-invested industrial parks, including Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) and Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP), has allegedly been associated with massive land grabs, environmental destruction, and affected access to water, health and livelihood of local residents.
