The International Labour Organization estimates that nearly 21 million people are victims of forced labour worldwide, 90% of whom are exploited in the private sector. It further estimates that forced labour in the private economy is today worth USD150 billion in illegal profits per year. The Asia-Pacific region accounts for the largest number of forced labourers, 56% of the global total, which is equivalent to 11.7 million people. Established in 2011, Liberty Asia aims to prevent human trafficking through legal advocacy, technological interventions and strategic collaborations with NGOs, corporations and financial institutions. Liberty Asia is made up of a group of professionals from different industries dedicated to a more effective, coordinated response to forced labour, focusing specifically on slavery and human trafficking.
