Activists fear abuse in Malaysian labor amnesty

Malaysian activists have urged the government to halt an amnesty program for illegal workers until clear guidelines are drawn to ensure migrants are not victimized or cheated. The amnesty...will be Malaysia's biggest effort to manage its growing population of foreign workers. Undocumented migrant workers will be fingerprinted to create a biometrics database and allowed to stay on if they have a job or will be deported without penalty. Workers' rights group Tenaganita says some 330 companies facilitating the registration process are charging exorbitant fees. It also said...the amnesty will victimize many migrant workers, who had entered the country with work permits but became illegals after being cheated by unscrupulous parties.
