Amazon's response to worker death from extreme heat

We were deeply saddened to hear that an employee of a construction company working on a future Amazon building recently passed away. Our thoughts and condolences go out to their family. Health and safety is a top priority for Amazon throughout our value chain. Our Supply Chain Standards require our suppliers, including third-party contractors, to provide workers with a safe and healthy work environment that avoids harm to workers’ physical and mental health. This includes providing workers with adequate ventilation, PPE, rest options, sun protection, and hydration if our suppliers’ workplace conditions could result in harm from heat. They must also comply with applicable laws regarding occupational safety, working conditions, and health standards.

Although unrelated to this incident, in addition, we want you and your readers to be aware of the ways we manage extreme weather situations for our employees at work. We use forecasting tools to predict increased levels of heat and adapt our processes accordingly. All our buildings are equipped with temperature controls, and we have implemented a range of measures in our facilities during periods of extreme heat. These include providing cool-down areas with everyone encouraged to take a break anytime they need, cool water in work areas, and safety tips for all workers distributed through online and onsite communications channels about heat-related illness and hydration guidance.
