...Currently in Argentina there is a production of around 630 thousand tons of pork. The mega-pig farm project would give us 900 thousand tons more, but what would they be used for? What environmental and economic costs would they have? Would they generate employment, or would it only be a business for China?... Once again, the Argentine economy is immersed in a deep crisis that shows the difficulties that society has in defining a development path... In the framework of a worldwide socio-environmental crisis, of which the COVID 19 zoonotic pandemic is evidence, the debate on development strategies has reopened in our country. This is happening as a result of the initiative of an investment project in mega-pig farms, promoted by China and a group of large Argentine private companies, which would be minority partners in the project...If this initiative were to become a reality, our country's strategy would once again be guided by the interests of groups with economic power whose main objective is the appropriation of income and profits in foreign currency...From our point of view, development should be oriented towards generating the conditions so that all people can live the lives they desire, respecting planetary limits and fundamental human rights. A path of this nature requires progress towards a policy of promoting production based on a just ecological transition. In this article we discuss the mega-pig farm project from this perspective...
