Dom Phillips was known for reporting illegal mining on the Yanomami territory. The Yanomami Indigenous Land is the largest reserve in Brazil. There are around 20,000 miners (garimpeiros) illegally exploiting it. Approximately 110 communities are directly affected by the deforestation, destruction and the contamination of water and soil caused by illegal mining, as well as suffering attacks and threats.
