Cambodia: Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand must show work permit to get vaccinated while undocumented workers' vaccination is in limbo

"Undocumented migrant workers in Thailand susceptible to C-19", 15 July 2021

Many Cambodian workers in Thailand are still waiting to receive their Covid-19 vaccinations according to a recent announcement by the Thai Ministry of Labour.

The ministry announced ... that all migrant workers from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar working in Thailand now must have legal working documents to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

Bun Siha, president of Workers’ Union representing Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand, said: “I heard about this announcement from the Thai government two weeks ago.”

According to the announcement issued by Thailand’s Ministry of Labour, the ruling applies to all migrant workers of factories in Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan provinces.

All the migrant workers in these places must have official working permits to get the Covid-19 vaccine.

It said that the Covid-19 mobile team observed that only 30,000 migrant workers have shown their legal work permit to get a Covid-19 inoculation at the hospital.

The team visited factories and construction sites to take samples and found out that some of them have Covid-19 at their work places...

Center for Alliance of Labor and Human Rights (Central) official Loung Sophon said that it is a concern that many Cambodian workers have not yet received the Covid-19 vaccine.

“The Thai government should give the Covid-19 vaccine to all workers whether or not they have legal working documents because it is important to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the country,” he said.
