Canada: Ontario reforms proposal incl. to apply steeper fines for withholding passports, extend layoff protections & increase construction site facilities "not enough", says union

In March 2023, Ontario lawmakers introduced a new omnibus law proposal which included increasing penalties for employers who withhold workers' passports, extend mass layoffs to remote workers and require more washroom facilities on construction sites.

While the changes have been welcomed, the United Food and Commerical Workers (UFCW) Canada union has called for agricultural workers to be afforded with equal access to existing legislation. The union says this would lead to more immediate support for workers who experience abuse. The opposition has also said paid sick days to be a priority, which the proposals reportedly do not address.
