Cambodian environmental activist Chhorn Phalla was reportedly arrested without arrest warrant and placed in pretrial detention on charges of clearing state forest land. Human rights groups allege the detention is aimed to silence him, after he denounced forest crimes and illegal logging.

Previously, Phalla had been summoned in 2019 and beaten by a mob in 2020.
