In 2024, social leader and human rights defender Melina Sandoval and indigenous leader Claudia Susana Quintero have been victims of intimidation and threats due to their active resistance against the construction of the ammonia plant in indigenous territory belonging to the Mayo-Yoreme people, Ohuira Bay, Sinaloa, Mexico. The plant is intended to produce 2,200 tons of ammonia for export, mostly to the United States. It is a project of the company Gas y Petroquímica de Occidente (GPO), a subsidiary in Mexico of the Swedish-German firm Proman.
