Compares social & environmental performance of the following companies, listed from highest score to lowest: Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, General Motors, Volkswagen, Ford, Hyundai (part of Hyundai Kia Motor), DaimlerChrysler.] The big players in this sector continue to develop models with higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions, hybrid models that combine gasoline and battery power...Ford, GM and Honda are also testing hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles...[On the other hand] most automakers don't plan to begin large-scale production of greener vehicles any time soon...California's state government...adopted regulations in 2004 requiring automakers to reduce vehicle emissions by 25% by 2016; these are being challenged in court by all the ranked companies...[M]any [automakers] are now moving manufacturing to low-wage nations such as China, India and the Philippines, all of which have limited environmental and health and safety protections.
