On 19 January 2024, Nallely Sepúlveda and her son Edinson David Higuita, land rights defenders from the Peace Community in Urabá, Colombia, were killed. The killings occurred after weeks of tension due to the construction of a new road over a piece of land designated as an environmental protection zone given the high levels of deforestation. There has also been mining interests in this land and concessions have allegedly been granted without the consent of the community. The killings also occurred in the wake of the 27th anniversary of the community which has been resisting as a humanitarian zone within a conflict zone.
