Eight Killed and 18 Injured in Riot in Kunming Suburb, Local Gov't Says [China]

Eight people died in a fight between workers at a construction site and villagers in a suburb of the southwestern city of Kunming on October 14, a local government has said. The government of Jinning County said…that a conflict between workers and residents of Fuyou Village broke out at the site of a trading and logistics center being built. Police said that eight people – six workers and two villagers – were killed. Another 18 people were hurt, the county government said…Villagers told Caixin the riot was over a land dispute and those involved were not construction workers but a group of unknown people…Some of the attackers had shields bearing police symbols. The attackers used knives and tear gas, villagers said. One person said villagers fought back by lighting gas on fire, but it is unclear how that worked. Villagers said a similar fight occurred in June when villagers accused the local government of breaking the law when it took land for the trading and logistics center. Villagers told the local Chuncheng Evening News at the time that work on project was affecting drainage ditches and causing farms to flood after heavy rainfall…
