Employers in Slovakia claim it is difficult to employ Roma
[Original report in Slovak. Title translation and following summary of the report's key points, provided by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre].
Some employers in Slovakia claim that they often face administrative barriers when intending to hire Roma people. Also, a representative of Whirlpool said: "If we want to employ Roma, we have to make exceptions because of their inadequate education." More than half of the Roma the company employs have only primary education. A recently published UNDP Report on the Living Conditions of Roma in Slovakia found a very low rate of engagement in the labour market among the Roma population of productive age. The UNDP experts recommend a public debate on the possibility of implementing temporary balancing measures for the Roma in the area of education. Increased initiatives by the private sector to employ Roma are also needed.
