Former Leon’s employee wins racism complaint case [Canada]

Human Rights Commission board of inquiry has ruled that the Leon’s Furniture...discriminated against a black sales associate...Cromwell quit her job in 2008...[The] board of inquiry chairwoman...found Cromwell was subjected to 10 incidents of racial harassment...The most disturbing incident [was] when three different managers failed to interject when sales manager...moments before he was about to begin Cromwell’s performance review...told the others to clear the room because “it’s time for a lynching”...[The chairwoman] said the fact the comment arose in the context of a performance review underscores the economic and power differences between the managers and Cromwell...The board of inquiry also found that Cromwell had been subjected to harsh disciplinary action...[and] ordered Leon’s to pay Cromwell $8,000 in general damages...She has also been awarded 18 months of lost earnings...Store managers, supervisors and all staff must be trained in cultural competency in the context of human rights...CEO of Leon’s Furniture Ltd., could not be reached for comment.
