Fujita Corporation's response

26 June 2023

Fujita Corporation (Fujita) is pleased to respond to the request from Business & Human Rights Resource Centre regarding the report by the Justice For Myanmar, reporting on the Japanese Government-financed railway projects in Myanmar.

Fujita’s participation (as a member of the joint venture) in the Yangon-Mandalay Railway Improvement Project, a Japanese Government Development Assistance Project, commenced in 2019. Fujita is working with the Japanese Government and JICA to ensure that this project contributes to the livelihood of the local people through job creation and leads to an improvement of the infrastructure environment, and is carrying out the construction work in accordance with the contract. Fujita does not perceive that its business activities or that of its subcontractors support the military.

The Y-Complex project in which Fujita participates has been suspended since February 1, 2021, and Fujita has not paid any land rent for this project since then.

Fujita will continue to monitor the local situation closely to ensure that this project can be carried out with due respect for fundamental human rights and having the utmost regard for the safety of the people of Myanmar and those involved in this project as our top priority.
