Glovo response to Fairwork's Uganda ratings 2023

Glovo is an on-demand technology platform founded in Barcelona in 2015 with presence in 25 countries currently. Glovo commenced operations in Uganda in Oct 2020. In Africa, we are present in Morocco, Kenya, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Tunisia.

In 2023, Glovo introduced The Courier’s Pledge in Uganda - our commitment to increase the social rights and benefits available to couriers, regardless of employment or work status with the company. It was developed with advice from the Fairwork Foundation, establishing a new set of standards that includes fair hourly earnings (guided by WageIndicator’s data on fair earnings and living wages), improvements to insurance coverage and access to learning & development training, safety and maintenance provisions.

Through this industry-leading program, we aim to ensure:

  1. Fair Earnings – Weekly earnings have increased by 10% in the countries where The Couriers Pledge has been implemented. ‘Loyalty bonus’ granted or exchanged for time-off.
  2. 360° Safety – Assistance with different types of accidents, third-party liability and transport of goods, as well as sick leave, maternity and paternity leave, an SOS Button inside the app, and access to other extra benefits.
  3. Equality – Transparency and two-way communication between Glovo and couriers (appeal process).
  4. Community – Encouraging open dialogue while offering learning opportunities for couriers (G-learning platform).
