Hima is finally dust-free [Uganda]

Three months after it was closed to allow the installation of the new Shs 8.5bn bag filter technology that would see the dust emissions reduced to almost zero, Hima Cement Limited in Kasese, can now rest assured that it has finally dealt with the one issue that had caused public acrimony...This was done in line with agreed international safety and environmental standards. It had been a long road to getting where Hima finds itself in. Every morning, Florence Ithungu, together with her 900 pupils at St Joseph’s primary school Hima, woke up to yet another day of suffering. For the children, going to school was one of their biggest nightmares. Lying just a few meters from the Hima Cement factory, the school has for the past decade, been one of the victims of the consistent waves of dust from one of the outdated production lines at the factory.
