Hong Kong mulls e-waste legislation

The Environment Bureau of the HKSAR Government recently issued a consultation document to seek public views on introducing legislation to implement a mandatory producer responsibility scheme for the proper management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The consultation period will be open for around three months until 30 April...The SAR… has around 100 temporary outdoor storage areas in the New Territories… many with hazardous components that are harmful to the environment and human health if not properly treated… Under the proposal, the scheme would require consumers to contribute to the costs of collecting and treating regulated products… Being an environmentally and socially responsible company, importers and distributors should share part of the costs, rather than asking customers to pay for the whole charge…
