Pranab Doley - Greater Kaziranga Land and Human Rights Protection Committee (GKLHRPC)
Sources
On 12 July 2026, Pranab Doley, convener of the Greater Kaziranga Land and Human Rights Protection Committee (GKLHRPC), was arrested alongside defenders Rajib Pegu, Brijit Kutum, Amit Nag and Bhaskar Saikia after years of campaigning against the proposed Hyatt luxury hotel project at Inglay Pathar near Kaziranga National Park, which he and other Indigenous leaders alleged threatened Adivasi ancestral lands and was proceeding without respecting community rights. Rights groups alleged that police arrested Doley without producing a warrant and that the charges were intended to criminalise his peaceful defence of Indigenous land rights. Hyatt has previously been identified in connection with the proposed hotel project, although the company has not been found to have perpetrated the arrest.
BHRC invited Hyatt Hotel Corporation and Juniper Hotels to respond regarding the attacks against Indigenous defenders. Hyatt Hotel responded and stated, "Hyatt has not entered into any agreement to brand or operate the proposed hotel project at Inglay Pathar/Hathikuli near Kaziranga National Park". The full response is available below. Juniper Hotels did not respond.
