On 30 March 2025, journalist Sumit Jha of South First was detained by Hyderabad Police while covering student protests at the University of Hyderabad, India. The protests erupted in response to the Telangana government’s clearing of 400 acres of campus forest land for mixed-use development, a project managed by the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC). Jha was detained while recording a confrontation between students and police. He was held in a police van, had his phone seized, and was later released after being taken to Kollur Police Station.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) to respond; it did not.
