Miriam has dedicated her life to defending the cultural and land rights of the Garífuna people in Honduras and is leading the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH). The displacement of Garifuna communities and the loss of cultures that come with the development of tourism is growing. OFRANEH have previously brought two cases against the state of Honduras pending at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) and against the Canadian investor Randy Jorgensen for his mega-tourism project illegally built on Garífuna land. On 16 January 2019, military personnel intercepted the vehicle where Miriam Hernandez and members of OFRANEH were traveling. The Afro-Caribbean Garifuna community in Guapinol has been subjected to State repression due to their work in the defense of water. The military personal tried to confiscate the vehicle without a court order and harassed the defenders. Miriam Miranda has been subjected previously to arbitrary arrest, criminalization, kidnapping and physical assaults due to her work as a land rights defender.
