On 25 August 2025, Sandra Miranda Ortega, a land and territory defender and opponent of the Milpillas Dam project in Zacatecas, Mexico, was subjected to a coordinated campaign of harassment and criminalisation by public authorities. This included defamation and the unauthorised leaking of her personal information aimed at discrediting her efforts to protect local communities and ecosystems. Municipal officials falsely spread rumours that Sandra had sold her land, damaging her credibility and provoking distrust within the community.

The campaign against Sandra Miranda is allegedly linked to economic and political interests behind the dam project, which is said to threaten the livelihoods and environmental health of local populations along the Atenco River.
