Myanmar: Garment workers reportedly forced to work unpaid overtime if targets are not met

"Swearing at BOHUA FASHION garment factory and asking for double fabric standards", 13 October 2023

In the BOHUA FASHION garment factory, officials told the Myanmar Labor News that when the officials asked the workers for [hourly targets] they asked for double the [amount] that the workers could...sew and [swore at workers]...

"There is pressure ...to [meet] the [targets]...At the end of the month, they said that they would pay 5,600 kyats as allowance. After working for a whole month, they called a meeting and said that they would only pay 4,800 kyats as allowances because the [targets] were not met...

The workers at the factory also explained that if the [workers] did not complete the [targets], they would have to work for free without any overtime pay.

In addition, a female worker said that there is no safety for women workers because there is no care [or] planning for overtime meals and there is no [transportation available] to return home...

"It is not safe for the girls...they have to work overtime, and the factory does not take responsibility for anything," she said.

There is no medical room or medical equipment in the factory. The female worker added that the 4 [toilets] used by the workers are not safe.

"There is no medical clinic at the workplace, no treatment [available]....There are only 4 toilets for the workers, one of which is bad. The other three have bad doors. As a girl, how do you use it? Just think about it," he said.

Every time inspection teams visit the factory, some workers are selected by the factory and trained in advance. The workers also said that they were asked to answer as they were taught.

BOHUA FASHION CO.,LTD is Yangon, Hlaing Tharay Township, The Shwe Linban Industrial Zone is located on Kawan Street and is said to be operating with about 500 workers...

The workers told Myanmar Labor News that they are sewing brands such as NKD.
