On 30 November 2023, the Council of the EU and the European Parliament came to a political agreement on a directive that would protect those targeted with strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs). The final compromise text, reflecting the political agreement, is available here. Further information leading up to the political agreement is available in this story.

The Council's Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper) accepted the compromise text in December 2023. The Directive was approved by Members of the European Parliament in plenary in February 2024. It is expected to become enforceable in 2026.
