S. Korea: Two Filipino domestic workers missing amid employment concerns
“The disappearance of the two Filipino domestic workers highlights a ‘foreseen departure’ due to rushed implementation,” 23 Sep 2024
According to a comprehensive report from the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Ministry of Labour, two Filipino domestic workers have been confirmed missing since the evening of 15 September after leaving their accommodation in the Yeoksam-dong area of Seoul. … A total of 100 Filipino domestic workers entered the country on 6 August and completed their training by 2 September, commencing work shortly thereafter.
The Ministry of Labour speculates that the workers' disappearance may be attributed to economic difficulties and job insecurity…. Reports indicate that the average salary received by these workers on their first payday, 20 September, was around 500,000 won (…) with deductions for insurance and accommodation expenses, and a payment structure that sees wages split over the month.
…In response, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced plans to improve the wage payment structure for domestic workers from a monthly to a weekly system, in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour, in an effort to prevent further worker departures.
