Sarbanand Farms responds to allegations of poor working conditions

As reported by news sources, Honesto Silva Ibarra passed away [on] Aug. 6, 2017... [he] was an H-2A worker for Sarbanand Farms LLC... Mr. Silva was diabetic [and] management... was unaware of this condition. Upon seeing Mr. Silva’s condition and learning from his nephew that he was diabetic, the company immediately called 911 and an ambulance arrived a short time later... Notwithstanding that he was getting the best medical care possible, Mr. Silva died ...[and] the company’s information is that [he] passed away due to complications of his diabetes...Sarbanand Farms has written policies that cover working conditions and requirements depending on weather conditions. All employees were provided with a copy of these policies, both in English and in Spanish... Other employees have reported illnesses. Per company policies, employees who have reported illnesses have been taken to health facilities and been provided appropriate treatment, all at the expense of the company... Numerous meetings are held with workers. Written policies are distributed to all workers at the beginning of the work season. The company encourages workers to report problems or concerns. The company prides itself on treating workers fairly and having good working conditions.
